The Garage Flying Page

I know that this type of behaviour happens a lot in the homebuilder sub-culture, but has been very rarely documented. The behaviour I'm talking about is "Garage Flying" ...that irrepressable urge to get into the air before the aircraft is completed. I'm sure you know what I mean....

Perhaps you think that the original inspiration for garage flying resulted from drinking too much alcohol and a lack of respect for the 8 hours bottle to throttle rule! (... or was that 8 metres?) Nothing could be further from the truth. After many long hours in the workshop in sometimes freezing conditions and after a few cups of coffee, your imagination tends to run wild.

Sunday driving in the old Cavalier

Cruzin' around the shed in the old Cavalier

Hummin' along in the Hummel

Taking Curty's Hummel Bird for a test flight. Goes well! ... and fast!

Of course, a good piece of plastic sheet can allieviate the need for safety glasses.

Marty's Cavalier, with testing well under way!

This Smart A... has a bloody canopy ...Cheat!!!

Pete's Super Diamond undergoing limited taxi testing - limited due to proximity of steel obstruction.

WARNING!

Suitable eye protection should always be worn when flying aircraft with incomplete canopies and windshields to minimise the chance of possible injury.

Here is a great idea! This drawing was provided by an experienced UK Cavalier builder who suggested that the modified fixture be used where a very secure attachment is required

So now you know that your not the only one....
