We will start our walk at the base of Mt Little Joe and go up the Backstairs Track in the Yarra State Forest, then along the hills above Warburton and up to the La La Falls. Descending in to Warburton we will walk along the Yarra river track. Afternoon tea at a vineyard in the area.

In 1867 three small boys wandered away from their Daylesford homes.Piece this tragic story together as you walk the approximate route the boys walked. Find out about the community response to the event and an enduring legacy of the event. Discover landscapes that were the country of the indigenous inhabitants and goldfields which are now part of the Wombat State Forest. Along the track and afterwards you will see remnants of gold mines, water races, timber tramways and touching memorials. Walking tracks only. Car shuffle required. Rating due to length. One long hill.

Procedure:
Meet at 6.15 pm at Ramsden Street, Clifton Hill near Quarries Park (Melway 2D C3) for a circular walk along the Merri Creek. Pop the folding chair and esky in the car boot along with a bottle of champagne and some treats to share. Following the walk we have found a great place to pop the champagne corks, settle comfortably into our folding chairs and watch the dazzling 9.00 pm Melbourne Fireworks over the city skyline!

Then return via Dights Falls and Deep Rock back to
Studley Park.

We will spend three days walking in the western part of the Kosciuszko National Park that includes part of the Jagungal Wilderness area, starting the walk near Round Mountain and finishing near the Tooma Reservoir (car shuffle of about 15 kms). We will pass Round Mountain, Mt. Jagungal, the Tooma River a derelict goldmine, many of the old huts and hopefully getting great views of this spectacular wilderness area of the Park.

Meet at the bandstand on the foreshore at the end of Bay Road Sandringham (Melways 76G10) in time for a 6.30am start (note: the sun rises later in February!). Free parking on the street at the end of Bay Rd on Sundays. We follow the path around the bay to just past Ricketts Point, pausing along the way to view the signboards showing paintings of famous artists, in the locations that inspired them. Breakfast at Ricketts Point, and then return via the same route.

We are planning an outdoor rock climbing weekend for later in the year, so this is an opportunity to get some indoor practice. Venue is Hardrock, 16-18 Varman Court, Nunawading, from 2pm. Cost: $30 each if fewer than 10 participants; $19 per head if 10 or more participants. Cost includes entry, harness hire, shoe hire and instruction. Booking at least 2 weeks in advance essential. The South Coast Track, Melaleuca to Cockle Creek, is a difficult walk of 82 kilometres, walked in a minimum of 6 days, but allowing for weather 7 to 8 days is the norm. Access to the track is via light plane to Melaleuca or Cox Bight, landing on the beach. The southern coastline of Tasmania is beautifully wild, isolated and very unpredictable. Weather is the major factor in the degree of difficulty experienced on this walk. Departing some time in March, dates to be advised.

Bus or car shuffle from Westerfolds Park to Currawong Bush Park, a 59 hectare remnant of the native bushland and ecology of the area prior to European settlement. The walk continues down the Mullum Mullum Creek trail to the Main Yarra trail which passes Petty’s historic orchard on the way back to the car park at Westerfolds Park. Meet at Victoria Park at 8.45 a.m.

This walk starts near Pt Addis at Ironbark Reserve and the track goes into the forest into a unique habitat dominated by tall iron bark trees. Large parts of the forest are home to grasstrees and silver banksias, correas and white daisy. The track reaches the cliff tops with wonderful views of the red, orange and yellow cliffs. These contrast with the green bush and blue sea and sky. There is a car shuffle involved.

Liz Manton and John Sheridan will talk about their five-day walk in August 2011 in the northern section of the Kungsleden Trail in Swedish Lapland, 300km above the Arctic Circle. This area is not widely known, but the walking is not hard and the scenery is spectacular.
There are multiple options for doing the walk from pack carrying everything (what Liz and John did) to staying in well-spaced (in terms of walking distance) huts, sometimes with attached saunas!
