In anticipation of hot weather we will take the tram from Kew to Hawthorn Bridge and then walk along the Yarra into the city. There will be an opportunity to purchase a gormet take away lunch or BYO. Starting at Jerusalem Creek inlet, we will follow the road past Blue Gum flat, along Knowles Gap Track to O’Toole Flat. Then the 4WD track will take us up to Rocky Peak. From there we’ll drop down the spur to pick up the 4WD track lower down and follow it back to Jerusalem Creek.

Starting near the Anglesea Golf Course and then walking through coastal woodland to meet the coast near Urquharts Bluff. From there it’s along the rocks and sand at low tide, then through heathland and back to the start. A solid medium walk with some steep pinches, great coastal views, wildflowers and waves. This walk provides the opportunity for the serious bushwalker to undertake a challenging 6 hour circuit walk close to Melbourne. The route passes through the major habitats of Kinglake National Park and provides fine views of the nearby ranges and Melbourne.

Starting up high we will pick up one of the starting points of the Murrindindi River and follow it down stream. Expect to get wet as we walk in the creek much of the time – water proof the contents of you pack! As there will be a steep descent at the start, with boulders and sudden drops to be negotiated, the pace will be slow at around 1km to 2km per hour. A car will be left near the expected take-out point. A great physical, mental and navigation challenge.

Meet at the end of Kanes Bridge near Studley Park Boathouse for a 7.00am departure. We follow the river past the flying fox colony, then cross the pipe bridge for coffee and raisin toast at Fairfield Boathouse (opens at 8.30am). Then along the Merri Creek to Dights Falls, and complete the loop via Deep Rock back to Studley Park for another coffee. Experience original indigenous bushland and abundant birdlife, close to the city in the cool of the early morning.

Lake Mountain and the surrounding State Park are the closest part of Victoria's Alpine region to Melbourne. This is a great walk that visits some of the best features Lake Mountain has to offer including Alpine Ash and Snowgum forests, the site of an historic cattlemen hut and several lookouts over the Victorian Alps. Walk contains a steep climb.

We will meet at Victoria Park East Kew as usual. We will travel by tram to the start of the walk in East Melbourne. We will walk through the Fitzroy Gardens, Yarra Park, Royal Botanic Gardens returning through Birrarung Marr and the Fitzroy Gardens. We will visit the Artists Society Gallery in East Melbourne before returning to East Kew. You will require an All Day Zone 1 or a Seniors Daily Met ticket to travel on the tram. The walk will be amended if the forecast maximum temperature is 30 or more.

As it may be hot and humid in February, the walk will end at lunchtime. Bundoora Park has ancient red gums, a farm, and an historic homestead to visit, which often has a special art exhibition. All walking on paths.

A walk with a twist. Westerfolds Park via Eltham to Diamond Creek and return. Walking on bike and walking trails, a lovely walk along the Diamond Creek Valley - an easy walk of 10 kilometres just in time for lunch at the Diamond Creek Hotel. Had too much for lunch – take a train back to Eltham or enjoy a return walk back to the cars at Westerfolds Park.

Camping at Langfords West Camp area. Toilets are provided but no other facilities. This area offers a wide range of walking opportunities and as it is already up high there is not much climbing required to get great views. The Oxfam team is planning some long walks but others can organise walks to suit themselves.

  1. Langfords to Fitzgerald Hut, along Heathy Sput to Rocky Valley dam, past the ruined castle and Damsite hill, back to Langfords via Pretty valley pondage. 44km
  2. Langfords Gap to Batty Hut, Ropers Hut, Johnson and Edmondson Huts, returning via Watchbed Creek. 34km

This ride will cover the entire new Eastlink Trail from Springvale Rd to the Patterson River. There will be a short road ride from Mitcham Station to reach the start of the trail, and we’ll use the Dandenong Creek Trail (unsealed) to reach Carrum. The first section of the trail is quite hilly but the bulk of it is flattish. BYO lunch. If there are works on the Belgrave/Lilydale or Frankston lines that Sunday the ride will need to be changed. I will contact all those on the ride sheet if this happens. Meet at Mitcham Station north side at 9.00am.

Nestled in the Strzelecki Ranges, Tarra-Bulga National Park is home to mountain ash, messmate, blackwood, beautiful fern gullies, ancient myrtle beeches and cool temperate rainforests. Rustic cabins at Fernholme, Tarra Valley Tourist Park have been booked, approximate cost $55, or alternatively, camping facilities available. Saturday will be spent exploring this haven for plants and wildlife. Sandra will lead a picturesque walk along the Mirboo North/Boolarra Rail Trail on our homeward journey on Sunday (see separate entry).

Walk to the top of Mt. Stirling just after full moon in time to catch the sunrise. Follow the sunrise with a hot breakfast – egg and bacon rolls, hot drinks. Easy walking on groomed trails with a climb of about 360m. Camp on the mountain or stay in comfort in Mansfield. Meet up at Minimbah on the Mt. Buller road in the early hours of Sunday morning for the walk up the mountain.

Buninyong was first settled in 1841, and the Mt Buninyong reserve around the top of an extinct volcano was set aside as a public park in 1866. This circuit walk goes from the township to the top of the mountain (approx 250m climb) and back via the von Mueller designed botanical gardens. On the mountain look for eucalypts, a 10,000 year old crater, koalas and 360 degree views over farmland.

The descent is through a gorgeous gully. Distance 17km (M 7hrs) or 21km (MH 8.5hrs), depending on whether we include the Mt Buangor summit (steep climb/descent; 4km return). (One of 2008 Federation Weekend walks)

  • SUN: SUGARLOAF CIRCUIT—MH—Another beautiful walk, starting/finishing Ferntree picnic area. 10.5km. Explore The Cave. Fair amount of climbing (total 500m). Need to cross sloping rock face using a chain. Steep climb to the Sugarloaf. Very steep descent 400m over 3km to return to the car park. 5-6hrs walking.

8am walk starts each day. Sat night dinner at one of Beaufort’s pubs. Camping/accommodation options: Beaufort Lake Caravan Park, Richards (toilet only), Beaufort’s pubs or motels.

We plan to walk along the spectacular Woolamai ocean beach then on tracks in the Woolamai Fauna reserve and up to the lighthouse approximately 110 m above sea level. From here we see panoramic views of Phillip Island. The second part of the walk is around the historic Churchill Island.

This ride ranges round the City of Casey taking in two attractive wetlands and the Wilson Botanic Park. There’s a bit of climbing, mainly in the northern section of the ride. Meet at Flinders St. Station to catch the 9.11 am Pakenham train. Meet on the platform at the back of the train. Or catch at another station down the line if preferred. If there are works on the Pakenham/Cranbourne line that Sunday another ride will be substituted. I will contact all those on the ride sheet if this happens.

Circuit: Starting from Scotchman’s Creek, Warburton, climb the Backstairs track and contour around the fire trail to Mount Little Joe summit. From summit descend off track to pick up the old tramway to Lyrebird lookout, La La Falls and back to cars via Four Mile Track and Old Warburton Road.

The first section of the Australian Alps Walking Track revisited. Commencing at the historic gold mining town of Walhalla this section winds its way through mountain forests to the high undulating Baw Baw Plateau and the first taste of alpine Australia. Spend a half day touring Walhalla, an interesting memory from a bygone era, tour the gold mines, enjoy the scenic walking around the town. The next 3 days will be a fairly relaxed walk to the top of the plateau via O’Sheas Mill Site, Mt. Erica and Mt. St. Phillack.

Meet at the beach end of St. Kilda Pier in time for a 6 am sharp departure. We will watch the sun rise as we walk around the bay to Station Pier. Stop for cofee and raisin toast, then return via Albert Park Lake. You can go home for a nap, or stay on in St. Kilda to swim or shop at the Sunday market. Early bird all day parking for $5.00 in lower level of St. Kilda baths car park. Bring coins for the ticket machine.

The track starts at Cape Schanck, follows the coast to Bushrangers Bay then heads inland through Greens Bush and crosses a road reserve to reach Arthurs Seat State Park, finishing on the foreshore at Dromana. The section approaching Arthurs Seat is steep. Car shuffle required.

Apart from its association with the Heidelberg school of artists (Streeton and his crowd), Heidelberg has an Art deco town hall, examples of Walter Burley Griffin’s architecture, a housing estate by A.V. Jennings ( one of the first of its kind) as well as ample open spaces including Darebin Parklands with an indigenous trail. You realise the leader has lived in the area for a long time.

Enjoy a morning walk after the Christmas festivities! The walk commences alongside the Yarra River at Church Street. Learn about the Yarra’s natural heritage, its past and current management and the part which we can all play in protecting that heritage for a sustainable future. The walk finishes at the delightful Abbotsford Convent where the monthly Farmers’ Market will be in full swing. You require a daily Met ticket. Please bring an environmentally friendly bag for purchases at the Farmers’ Market – no plastic bags, thank you.
