Fri-Sun 21/11 MCMILLAN’S TRACK – STAGE 5, MT SKENE TO WOODS POINT BC/PC MH / M

We began our 220 km McMillan’s Track trek just north of Omeo on Cup Weekend in 2005. We have been thwarted by the bushfires in the 2007 summer, so now we will tackle the last 30 kms, which ends in the old gold mining town of Woods Point. Walkers doing the full trip will be dropped up at Mt Skene on Friday night. This walk is graded MH because of the climbing. For the other walkers, in between support duties there is plenty to see at Woods Point.

Take the ferry from Stony Point to French Island (cost $20 adult, $14 concession) then a circuit walk along beach, heathland track and quiet road to The Pinnacles lookout over Westernport Bay. Lots of wildflowers, birds, echidnas, koalas, snakes, flies and mosquitoes.

Sun 2/12 HIGH LEAD TRAMLINE CIRCUIT WALK MH

We follow the High Lead Tramline north for several km . The track may be overgrown and climbs 400 m over 1.6 km in one very steep section. At the crest of the steep climb turn west into Downy Spur Rd then along several unsealed tracks to the "Walk into History Walking Track " leading back to the High Lead carpark.. Expect some magnificent scenery with tall forest, ferny gullys and dense understory. Possibility of lyrebirds, black cockatoos and other birdlife

A walk in the lower section of Lerderderg Gorge. Initially following the Lerderderg River bed to Long Point Diversion weir then ascending to the Blackwood Ranges Track to complete a circuit to the car park. several short steep sections. 500m descent and 500 ascent.

Bolin Bolin Billabong, Annulus Billabong and Banyule House are among the places to be seen in this area, which is so close to Kew. Walk follows the yarra so there are no hills and mostly on formed paths. Arvo tea at Dorothy's as this is the last walk for the year. Note meeting time 8.45 am due to short journey.

An alpine section of the Australian Alps Walking Track (alternative route) between Mt Jagungal and Dead Horse Gap (near Thredbo). Walking in the heart of the alpine wilderness the feature of the walk will be the Kosciuszko main range which includes Mt. Townsend, Blue Lake and Mt. Kosciuszko itself. Some previous expirence walking on an pack carry trip prefered. Participants expected to make own way to Thredbo. Group planning meeting to be held late November 07

Depending on the heat of the day we will either walk from Hawthorn Bridge into the city or catch a tram. Then browse around Victoria Market and Flagstaff Gardens before heading to the Eureka Tower for a birds eye view. Cost $16.50 or Concession $11.00. Daily Met ticket required. N.B. This walk is on THURSDAY as Vic Market doesn’t operate on Wednesdays. Meet at Victoria Park, Kew at 8.45 a.m.

Meet at the beach end of St Kilda Pier at 6am. We will watch the sun rise as we walk around the bay to Station Pier. Stop for coffee and raisin toast, then return via Albert Park Lake. You can go home for a nap, or stay on in St Kilda to swim, eat or shop.

Set in the eastern side of the Cathedral Range State Park this wallk explores part of the Little River as it flows through a small gorge. Exploratory walk . Contains a 2 – 3km off track section which includes a 300m climb. Length of walk will be determined by level of water in the river and vegetation encountered.

Sun 3/2 SOUTH DOWN THE BAY RIDE M

From Southbank we’ll ride down to Beacon Cove, then south down the bayside path to Mordialloc. From there we’ll head inland to Carrum and on to Seaford and finally along the back of the sandhills to Frankston where we’ll catch the train back to Flinders St. The ride is mainly off-road with a few stretches on quiet streets; there are some unsealed sections. There are bail outs for those who want a shorter ride. Meet at Southbank near the arched footbridge at 9.15am. BYO lunch but we’ll have morning coffee at a cafe along the way. If the forecast is for 30-35 bring bathers for a shorter ride and a swim. If it’s over 35 the ride will be cancelled. Meet at 9.15 am at Southbank near the footbridge.

Starting from Donnelleys Weir, the walk climbs up to the Great Dividing Range via Condons Track then continues along the range to to Mount Monda. Hill climbing (780m elevation gain), for fit walkers.

Regenerating woodlands, redgums and native grasslands. Total climbing 120m. Views over Melbourne and the airport. A chance to visit the restored historic Woodlands Homestead. Walk will not proceed if the forecast maximum temperature is 30 or more.

This is a recently proclaimed conservation area. Terrain varies from very degraded to pristine bush. We follow old vehicular tracks, quiet country roads & there is about 3 k’s of very rough off track – no bush bashing but innumerable wombat holes etc. Undulating terrain but nothing too challenging. Can be shortened if very hot. Note: Helper needed at Kew carpark

After walking along the Darebin Creek through the northern suburbs to historic Bundoora park, after which we shall visit the historic Bundoora Homestaead and the art show within. Board the tram in Plenty Road for the return journey.

The Walls of Jerusalem NP is adjacent - to the east - of the popular Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair NP. It consists of 5 main peaks dissected by open grassy valleys with lakes and tarns surrounded by wildflowers and groves of pencil pine. The park itself is quite small but it is intended that several days will be spent exploring the park and surounding area.

  • Day 1 Pack Carry 7km 600 m climbing.
  • Day 2 Base Camp - Day Walks ~12 km
  • Day 3 Pack Carry 8 km, side trip 5 km 200m climbing
  • Day 4 Pack Carry 8 km + optional Day Walk.
  • Day 5 Pack Carry 4 km, return to Melbourne

The date for the walk will be agreed in consultation with Steve Brown to allow the possibility of combining this walk with the Precipitous Bluff walk.

for those who have attempted Federation Peak, this is for you. Precipitous bluff - 75 kilometre - 7 to 9 day trek starting at Ida Bay then traversing the moonlight ridge track to Precipitous Bluff and returning to Cockle Creek via the south coast track. A hard walk featuring all southern Tasmania and the wilderness area has to offer.

Join Ray Thomas (of the Regent Honeyeater Project) and volunteers in placing 240 new nest boxes for Squirrel Gliders and Phascogales in the Lurg Hills. There will be some on-the-job training about how to do the task safely, and with optimal results for the animals. Involves off track walking, and an opportunity to practice navigation skills because we need to record the exact locations of the nest boxes for subsequent next box checking. (GPS would be useful.) Need to be willing to carry ladders throught the bush and climb them up trees. Very early start (6.15am) to get to Benalla by 9am on Saturday morning. We will stay at the Benalla Caravan Park on Saturday night. Come for one day or the weekend. There is also a nest box placement weekend on 1-2 December 2007.
