Sat 19 Feb FIRST AID COURSE -

Level I Outdoor Special first aid course will be presented by First Aid Management and Training Pty Ltd from 8.30 to 5.00 pm. If you would like to register for this course please contact Robyn by Friday, 11 February. The cost for this one day course is $80.00 for club members, and reimbursement through the club and Bushwalking Victoria is available on completion of the course. If you would like to do the Level II course, please Robyn know, as this is also possible.

Meet on the foreshore at the end of Bay Road Sandringham (Melways 76G10) in time for a 6.45am start (note: the sun rises later in February!). Free parking on the street at the end of Bay Rd on Sundays. We follow the path around the bay to just past Ricketts Point, completing our views of the signboards showing paintings of famous artists, in the locations that inspired them. Return via the same route, stopping for a light breakfast on the way.

This will be a hard walk due to an ascent or decent (depending on direction of travel) of over 1000m. Walk combines the dry forests of Mt Little Joe with the wet rain forests of Mt Donna Buang. Mt Donna Buang offers panoramic views over Melbourne, the Yarra Valley, Dandenong and Cathedral Ranges, Mount Baw Baw and the Alps. Car Shuffle required.

Sun 6 Mar SUMMER CHALLENGE H

This walk will be IN a river in the Baw Baw area. Current plans are for the West Branch of Tyres River, rising East of Rawson, crossing the South Face Road and rising on the slopes of Mt Baw Baw. We will spend the day walking in and out of the water (mostly in). Wear sturdy footwear and have a waterproofed pack (ie pack all gear inside a plastic bag inside rucksack). The challenge includes walking in water, over rocks and navigation. There might even be the odd waterfall to negotiate. Meeting time 6.45am.

In conjunction with Parks Victoria Help to clean up a popular training area for bushwalkers at the Ferntree Gully National Park. Lots of small tracks to cover. Those of you who are feeling energetic can scour the 1000 Steps circuit. 12.00 pm Barbeque lunch. Bring study boots, gardening gloves, comfortable clothing and jacket, sun-hat, water bottle and snacks and lunch to share. Please note that if it is a total Fire Ban the activity will be cancelled.

Starting at the tavern on Monbulk Rd at the bottom of the hill, we go up via Ridge track and Wattle track to Sherbrooke picnic ground, then back down again via Hillclimb track. View the falls from both sides of Sherbrooke Creek. See mountain ash, tree ferns and perhaps a lyrebird.

We plan to walk along the spectacular Woolamai Ocean Beach then on tracks in the Woolamai Fauna Reserve and up to the lighthouse at approx 110m above sea level. From here we see panoramic views of Phillip Island. The second part of the walk is around the historic Churchill Island.

Part of the Regent Honeyeater Project. Work in small groups to check nest boxes for evidence of use by Sugar Gliders, Squirrel Gliders and Phascogales. Involves helping to carry extension ladders through bush/farmland, locating the nest boxes, climbing ladders to check the nest boxes (optional) & recording findings.
Travel arrangements: requires an early start (about 6am on Saturday morning) to arrive at Benalla by 9.15am. Food/water: BYO lunch etc Sat & Sun, BYO BBQ on Saturday night at Old Lurg School or dinner at pub. Accommodation options: free accommodation (matress only) at Benalla Scout Hall or camp outside the hall; otherwise as arranged by Joslin Guest. GPS useful. Car rack useful.

A new walk in the southern part of the Lerderderg State Park. Great views and interesting vegetation at the top of Mt Sugarloaf, and a chance to explore relics of an historic antimony mine site dating from 1872 to 1947. All on track. Some steep sections.

Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve was created to preserve indigenous flora and fauna and includes box and stringybark, wattle, orchids and various members of the lily family. The walk continues through quiet streets in the Croydon Hills area to Yarrunga Reserve.

Four night stay at Mitre Lodge Mt Buller Village with beautiful views over the valley. Easter is 5 days long in 2011 because of Anzac Day holiday on the Tuesday. Plenty of short or longer day walks. Cost to book whole lodge is $250 per night – sleeps approx. 35 people in different room configurations. Final names required by February club meeting 16/2/11.

The area is to the east of the main Lerderderg SP. It is interesting geologically because river erosion has cut through lava to expose older underlying rock . Circuit walk in very rugged terrain. Lots of short, steep gravelly ascents and descents, which can be very slippery in winter. 2 off-track sections.

The plan is to leave the cars at the Howitt Plains car park (a 370 km drive from Melbourne) and set out on the walk early on the Saturday morning. Our route will take us past the Vallejo Gantner Hut and Macalister Springs before heading west along a ridge at the top of Devil's Staircase. A highlight of the walk will be the Crosscut Saw, a narrow ridge that offers magnificent views in all directions. We will then steeply descend 200 metres into Horrible Gap before ascending Mt Speculation (for a great sunset/sunrise) where we will camp (weather permitting) or if necessary proceed to a more sheltered spot 500 metres further on. We will then retrace our route back to the cars the following day.

This walk starts and finishes at the Memorial Arch on the Great Ocean Road and includes Coalmine Track and Moggs Creek Track. There is a short circuit walk at lunch time for those who wish to add a few extra kilometres. Walk includes a stretch along the beach.

Walk will commence at St. Andrews Market where we can spend an hour or so browsing and having morning tea before commencing with a short walk along the Heritage Trail to the old Queenstown Cemetery, then along rural roads and tracks to the northern end of One Tree Hill Reserve. About half the distance is steadily uphill. An alternative section of the return trip can be taken which will involve a steep uphill-downhill section. Note 8.45 a.m. start at Kew Library.

There is much variety in this walk on the northern edge of the Brisbane Ranges National Park. Mainly level but with one steep descent to the creek and then an even steeper climb on the opposite side of the valley. Walk through she-oaks and eucalypts, and grassy meadows where there are usually numerous kangaroos.

This is to complete the last 4 days of the Great Ocean Walk – from Aire River to Glenample. We will stay at the Port Campbell Youth Hostel for 4 nights. We will use our own cars for part shuttle, however will also use a professional shuttle service to minimise driving – there will be a cost of approx. $50 per person for this.
It is possible to only come for 3 nights and still do most of the walk so also let me know if this is your preferred option. Final bookings now being done so contact Carmel urgently.

Nestled in the Strzelecki Ranges, Tarra Bulga National Park is home to mountain ash, messmate, blackwood, beautiful fern gullies, ancient myrtle beeches and cool temperate rainforests. Rustic cabins at Fernholme, Tara Valley Tourist Park have been booked.
