Come test your stamina! This walk illustrates the amazing opportunities for long distance walking in suburban Melbourne while staying mainly in parkland. Although the distance is longer than usual, the generally flat terrain warrants this to be a MH walk, the hills are neither long nor steep. Expect a brisk pace.

Sun 4/3 CLEAN-UP AUSTRALIA DAY NA

This is an annual event for the club, traditionally at Yarra Bend Park If you are not on a walk that day we would love to see you there. Normally the clean-up goes from 9 am to midday. You need to wear stout boots/shoes as we often have to scour bush where folk have chucked rubbish. You also need to bring gardening gloves or similar. Big bags are provided & we leave them, filled, on the side of the road ready for PV to collect in due course. Meet at 9 am at Bellbird Picnic area

We will follow Ironbark Gorge down to where it joins Werribee Gorge, then follow the Werribee Gorge circuit and back up Western Bluff. There is no marked track through Ironbark Gorge and a bit of rock hopping. Two river crossings, will get wet feet if recent rains. A steep climb back up Western Bluff. Good boots essential.

Join a group exploring SW Vic & SE SA. Parks & areas of interest include Mt. Eccles & Byaduk Caves, Cape Nelson & Cape Bridgewater (GSSW), Mt Gambier, Beachport (Canunda NP), the Coorong & thence to Adelaide via Strathalbyn. Join & leave as you wish. Accommodation in caravan parks (tent or share a cabin). This is a bushwalking trip, not a sight seeing one, so expect daily bushwalks, but particpants can choose what they do & for how long they join us.

  • Wed 14th To Byaduk Caves (Mt Napier) & Mt Eccles. Fascinating volcanic country - E/M

walks with some scrambling into sink holes & cave exploring. Portland overnight.

  • Thurs 15th Cape Nelson walk (parts of GSWW) Magnificent coastal scenery. EM - M walks.
  • Frid 16th Cape Bridgewater (part of GSWW). Coastal cliff walk, magnificent scenery,

a 'petrified' forest & blowhole, gannet colony. E/M or M if we have enough people to do a car shuffle. Mt. Gambier overnight.

  • Sat 17th Explore Mt Gambier (Blue Lake etc.) then to Beachport via Millicent.
  • Sun 18th Canunda NP. More magnificent coastal scenery, another blowhole, lots of

middens & other evidence of aboriginal occupation. Beachport overnight

  • Mon19th Coorong via Robe. Explore Robe (lots of history). Stay at Policemans Point.
  • Tues 20th Coorong - pelicans, fascinating scenery & history, E/M walks - take a look

before the environmental degradation destroys this unique area forever

Bushfires have devastated most the western half of the alpine country. Stage 4 finished at Mt Skene. This last Stage will be a base camp at Woods Point -surrounded by fire but not burnt itself - with day walks exploration etc. Those wanting to walk through the burnt out region from Mt Skene can do that – if permitted by the DSE. Woods Point is about 100 km past Marysville (total not much over 3 hour drive) so can come up Saturday morning.

Birr-arrung, the Sacred River, has flowed for millenia through the tribal lands of the Wurundjeri. There is much to discover about the river’s past – its floods, vegetation, wildlife, industry, bridges and the many changes made to its course as a result of freeway construction. Leaving the river behind, discover the wonderful old buildings and the historic streetscapes of Richmond. From the grand houses of Richmond Hill to the simplicity of miners’ cottages, Gothic to bluestone dwellings, these all paint a picture of a diverse community flourishing from the 1840’s onwards.

As part of the Kew Festival, our Club is inviting the community to participate in a bushwalk along the Yarra following bush tracks and bike trails and taking in the fying fox colony, Fairfield pipe bridge and Dights falls. We are hoping to attract families and people possibily interested in joining the Club. This is also a club walk so all members are invited to participate and stay on and extend the walk along the Yarra Bike PathDepending on the numbers that book, we may need a couple of leaders and additional club members to be whips and assist/chat with new walkers. We will meet at Bellbird Picnic area off the Boulevard, Kew; Melway Map 2D K6 at 9.30am

We will tram it down Glenferrie/Hawthorn roads to start of walk at Gardenvale. Follow the Elwood Canal to Elwood then to the St Kilda Botanical Gardens for lunch. After lunch we walk to the Jewish Museum and Synagogue in Alma road where a tour has been arranged. The cost will be $6.00 pp or $4.00 concession. We return to Kew by tram. You will require a Zone1 daily or Seniors daily met ticket.Please note:because of time constraints and earlier meeting time of 8.15 am is required.

A loop walk from Monda Rd. Includes Wirawilla Boardwalk in the Myrtle Gully rainforest. A short but steep track (100m elevation) takes us to the top of Mount St Leonard (note this 4km section is optional).Also passes through about 2.3 km of clearfelled coupes in various stages of their "evolution". Virtually all gradients are gentle. A 1.5 km section is overgrown. Gaiters and long sleeves are helpful on this section, but not essential.

Conservation Activity. Very early start from Melbourne to meet the other volunteer groups on Saturday at 9.30am and then heading out in groups to the areas where we will check nest-boxes for Sugar Gliders, Squirrel Gliders and Phascogales. Need to be willing to carry ladders distances through the bush. Need to be willing climb ladders set against tree trunks. Well worth the effort if you are lucky enough see any of these creatures in their nest boxes. Excellent opportunity to practice navigation and GPS skills. BYO food and drinks, including for BBQ on Saturday night. We will stay in cabin accommodation at a local caravan park.

We return to this forest to now walk over the complete Richards track which was ½ closed 2 years ago because it was not possible to cross a creek. Some of the old historic logging rail curves can still be seen. Most of the time we will be walking in bush with some occasional views. A local identity who knows the history of the area will join us .Should be a pleasant day in the bush with refreshments at a vineyard.

Circuit walk along historic tramline to Starling Gap. Returning along roads and trails. Both walks today will start at Big Pats Creek. The walk is long,~19 km with one section of bush-bashing for 300 m down a steep incline, but there is no substantial climbing. (Note date change from Sunday to Saturday)

Starting at Chewton, we walk through an historic goldming landscape, following water races and tracks through dry open forest. Takes in the ruins of the Garfield wheel, Welsh Village, slate quarries and Expedition Pass Reservoir.

This is the walk intended for January, but was postponed due to very hot weather. Walk will commence at Port Melbourne Tram Terminus, continue along Beaconsfield Parade, circuit of Albert Park Lake and return to the city via the Shrine. Daily Met ticket required.

A pocket of undulating dry forest south of Ballan, bordered by the East Branch of the Moorabool River, and undulating farmland. Part of this walk is off-track, so strong footwear is required. Ballan lacks a good cafe, so bring picnic drinks, etc. for after the walk.

I’ve attempted the Fainters so many times now I think I’ve lost count, so will you help me make it this time? Too late in the year for summer walking but too early for a winter walk this ought to be a solitary walk. We’ll be starting from Falls Creek and finishing at Bogong Village. Depending on the weather we’ll camp up on Mt Fainter. Be prepared for cold nights and foul weather, or very serene and sunny conditions. Excellent views of Mt Feathertop and Mt Bogong, and a side-trip to Mt Niggerhead. Car shuffle required.

This will be one of the walks that Ian Arnott used to run in the Kinglake area. I have to contact him for details. While some may find these details a bit sketchy, all those that remember Ian’s walks will know to expect a good, solid day in the bush.

SUN 3/6 GEORGE BASS COASTAL WALK (New) EM

Walking Distance: 14 km.
The walk starts from the Punchbowl road and there is a well graded walking track that follows the clifftop eastwood to Kilcunda. As the path sweeps down from the road, a fine view unfolds across farmland and beach from Cape Woolamai in the west to Cape Paterson in the east. We will lunch at the Kilcunda pub.

Walk area: West MacDonnell Ranges NT Max walkers 8 Walking distance: 223 Km

Situated in the heart of Central Australia, the Larapinta Trail extends over 223 kilometers along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges. See main article in November 2006 Vagabond. The trail is divided into 12 sections (each a 1-2 day walk) of various grades from medium to very hard. Participants can walk the whole trail (20 days) or just certain sections.All walkers on the Trail need to have a good level of fitness, must be well prepared and equipped, prepared to carry reasonable loads and camp out.

A short but challenging walk. 550m of climbing over 8km, followed by a very steep descent over 3km. Interesting open forest with large expanses of granite slbs and cliffs, and plenty of view points. There are cascades and waterfulls towards the end of the walk, but if it hasn’t rained these may be dry.

Sun 10/6 LILLYDALE – WARBURTON RAIL TRAIL – BIKE RIDE EM/M

Ride area: Outer Eastern Suburbs Max riders 12 Riding distance: 40/50km

The ride begins and ends at Lilydale Station. We will ride out along the very scenic rail trail towards Warburton and turn back at either Woori Yallock or Launching Place depending on the group’s preferences. BYO lunch but we should be able to get a coffee along the way. There is a train that leaves Flinders Street at 9.06am and reaches Lilydale at 10.11am. Catch this or park on the east side of Lilydale Station and meet there at 10.15am.

The 21,600 Kinglake N.P. takes in the southern slopes and ridges leading off the rich volcanic Kinglake Plateau. Much of this walk follows shallow-soiled ridgetops, whose "dry " forest contrasts markedly with the tall Mountain Ash "wet" forest near our lunch spot at Jehosaphat Gully picnic ground. Some good views.
