Distance/direction from Melbourne: 180km NW Walk area: Mt Buangor State Park Nearest town: Beaufort
Max walkers 12 Walking distance: 10.6 km

A short, but challenging walk and very beautiful walk. 550m of climbing and corresponding descent. 5-6 hours of actual walking. Interesting open forest with large expanses of granite slabs and cliffs, and plenty of view points. We will walk in anticlockwise direction. There are cascades and waterfalls at the beginning. Then a steep climb to Mt Sugarloaf. On the descent we will see the spectacular cave of Cave Hill. Final few kilometres are flat. The park is not heavily walked. Track markers are often widely spaced. Tracks are often covered in leaf litter and might be slippery, so special care needs to be taken on steep sections. Some track junctions can be difficult to see. Poles recommended. Must carry water.

It’s a long way from Melbourne, so two days of the five day trip will be spent driving to and from the area. We will approach the National Park from the west, and spend the first night at the Wog Wog Campsite, from where we will start our walk the following day. We’ll head east along a track about 15 kms (ascending around 350 metres) to our base camp, passing through some spectacular scenery. I hope to set up camp in one of the large sandstone overhangs at the base of either Bibbinluke Mountain or cliffs adjacent to Burrumbeet Creek. However, you’ll need to carry a tent in case this isn’t possible. We’ll spend the next day exploring the park, whose attractions include Mt Cole, Mt Owen, The Castle and Monolith Valley. The area is renowned for its spectacular pagoda-like sandstone formations and great views. The next day will be taken up walking back to the cars via the same route.

We’ll head east along a track about 15 kms (ascending around 350 metres) to our base camp, passing through some spectacular scenery.
