Conservation Activity. Join landholders, bushwalkers and other volunteers in a nationally significant project to plant wildlife corridors on properties in the Lurg Hills near Benalla. The sponsors provide dinner on Saturday night, followed by a bush dance or spotlighting; and a BBQ lunch on Sunday. (If you cannot attend on this weekend, alternative planting weekends are on Sept 4-5 & Sept 19-20. Plus a bird survey weekend on Oct 2-3.)

There is much variety in this walk on the northern edge of the Brisbane Ranges National Park. Mainly level but with one steep descent to the creek and then an even steeper climb on the opposite side of the valley. Walk through she-oaks and eucalypts, and grassy meadows where there are usually numerous kangaroos.

We will base camp (i.e. with vehicles) probably at the “The Forest Camp” in the northern Warby-Ovens National Park. Enjoy a camp fire setting. Walks will be about 16 km on the Saturday and about 12 km on the Sunday, a combination of track and off track.

This walk visits a mineral spring, a saw mill site and Bullarto Reservoir in the Wombat State Forest, near the upper reaches of the Lodden River. The walk includes a short off track section in open forest.

The walk will take in the waterfront, Eastern Beach, Botanical Gardens and some of the inner city residential area of the City of Geelong. Travel to and from the walk will be by V/Line train. You will need to purchase a return ticket from Southern Cross, Melbourne to Geelong prior to the day of the walk. The cost of an Off Peak Seniors concession day return is $6.40 We will meet at Southern Cross Station, adjacent to Country train departures at 8:45am sharp. Train departs 9:00am. To return we will depart Geelong Station at 3.33pm arriving back in Melbourne at 4:33pm.

An 8 km half day walk in the National Park combined with time to explore the buildings and precincts of the heritage listed Quarantine Station. The complex of buildings at the station provides an insight into the development and evolution of human quarantine procedures in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Join other bushwalkers for a buffet dinner at the Sala Venezia. The venue is the Veneto club in Bulleen Rd opposite Trinity Grammar, Bulleen (Melways M32 D9). Meet outside the front entry next to the "Trevi” fountain and the Gondola at 5.30 for a 5.45 pm. If one is running late call Jim on 0408317784. No need to book, just turn up. Starting in Birds Land reserve, the walk passes two lakes and continues along tracks in Lysterfield Park. Pleasant views across the Dandenongs and back to Melbourne. There are two small hills that we will climb very slowly.Total climbing 250m.

The walk covers part of the R J Hamer Aboretum. A fire destroyed a substantial amount to mountain ash in 1962 and a decision was made to plant the area with exotic trees. There are 150 species of trees.

Start where the Lerderderg Track comes off O’Briens Rd. Follow Lerderderg Track and Spanish Onion Track SE to the Lerderderg River. Approx 200m change in altitude. Steep descent to the river. Then follow the lovely East Track beside the Lerderderg River to O’Briens Crossing. Approx 5 hrs of walking. All on track. Car shuffle.

MOUNT MACEDON

The walk goes through several vegetation types. After a steep ascent onto Mt. Macedon the walk leads to some fine views and links many features of the Macedon Regional Park including the Memorial Cross, Major Mitchell Lookout, Camels Hump rock formation, Sanatorium lake and the outskirts of the Mt. Macedon township.

This time we are joining up with the regular Yellingbo birders, which should be fun. We should see a lovely variety of bush birds there; I have seen Powerful Owls up there in the past, but no promises with birds. Take a picnic lunch and thermos, there will be toilets available. Binoculars are very useful and bird book if you have one. It can be wet underfoot, but boots should be OK.

A circuit ride, almost all on off-road tracks, starting and finishing at Dights Falls. We will ride out along the Merri Creek, stopping for morning coffee at Ceres. At the Ring Road we will head briefly west, picnic in the Jack Roper Reserve, then ride back via Fawkner Cemetery and the Upfield Bikeway and the Capital City Trail. Meet at the gazebo on the Clifton Hill side of Dights Falls at 9.30am. Nearest train station is Victoria Park. Various bailout options.

We will set up camp on the Friday evening and plan to do day walks on the Saturday and Sunday. The plan for the Saturday is to do Mount Stapleton and Hollow Mountain ( H). However there are a number of lovely areas to walk and I will plan options for those who may like to do a medium walk in the area. A good time to go to the Grampians is springtime to see the wildflowers so hopefully we should be able to see a lot of colour whilst out walking.

This circuit walk begins at Sea Winds with its lawns and gardens spread over 34 hectares. The walk includes great views over the Bay. Further on there are views to the Otway Ranges. We shall walk to the OT Dam.

A Medium Grade, Wednesday mid week walk. Details in Glen Tempest’s “Day Walks Around Melbourne” (Walk 100). A nice mixture of history (Wonthaggi Coal Mine), beaches, heathland and coastal reserve. 17 kms but dead flat! Note we leave early (7.30am) from Jim’s house, to avoid traffic and get immediate access to Eastlink.

Fri 29 Oct-Tues 2 Nov MT HOTHAM BASE CAMP: CUP WEEKEND M-H

An opportunity to do sections of iconic Victorian Alps walks as day walks. All walks are return walks. Proposed walks include:

  • Mt Feathertop via the Razorback. Start/finish at Diamantina Hut. Distance 22km. Grade MH. 7-9 hrs of walking. Beautiful views all the way. More or less level, with a few steepish pinches on the way to Federation Hut. Breathtaking views from the site of the Tom Kneen memorial cross near the base of Feathertop for those who don’t feel they can ascend to the summit.
  • Dibbins Hut Start/finish at the Loch carpark. Distance 20km. Grade MH. 7-9 hrs of walking. 700m descent to Dibbins Hut in the last 1km (and up again for the return). Views all the way. Those who do not want to make the descent/ascent can wait on the ridge above Dibbins Hut. Possibility to turn the walk into a circuit walk, returning via Red Robin Mine (strenuous uphill all the way out of the Cobunga Gap back to the Loch carpark). Distance: 22km. Grade H. 8-10 hrs of walking. Option of E walk to Mt Lofty as 7km standalone return or as a side trip on the way to Dibbins Hut.
  • Mt Tabletop return. Star/finish at JB Hut. Distance 12m. Grade M. 5-6hrs of walking. Climbs both coming and going. Or perhaps Precipice Plain. Start/Finish at Dinner Plain. Distance 18km. Grade M. 6-7 hrs of walking.
  • The Twins. Start/finish at Mt Hotham-Dargo Rd turnoff. The steep climb of about 400m to The Twins is rewarded by spectacular and completely unobstructed views in every direction. Distance 10km. Grade EM+. 3-4hrs of walking.
  • Other walks if additional leaders available—eg Spargos Hut. Plus lots of short walks in area for self-guided walks (eg, Mt Higginbotham-Silver Brumby Hut, Brandy Creek Lookout, Dargo Lookout etc). Also opportunity for self-guided bike rides.

ACCOMMODATION: Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday nights at APEA Lodge. Bunk style rooms, some double. Communal kitchen, sitting and dining room and sauna. BYO food, bedding, bath towels etc. Cost: $25-30pp per night. ACCOMMODATION DETAILS TO BE CONFIRMED.

An interesting 3 day hike visiting Mt. Feathertop, Diamantina Spur, Red Robin Battery , Dibbin Hut and Mt. Loch. Please note that if the group is interested an alternative 32 Km walk starting at Mt.Hotham and finishing at Bogong Village via Tawonga Tuts and the Niggerheads could be arranged. Both walks offer great views of Mt.Feathertop and the Bogong High Plains.

Traverses the western side of Mt Tanglefoot, passing through moist gullies with a rich variety of forest types including tall mountain ash and myrtle beech. 250m climbs to Mt St Leonard over 2km and another 250m climb over 3.5km. If wet, be prepared for leeches.

Buninyong was first settled in 1841, and the Mt Buninyong reserve around the top of an extinct volcano was set aside as a public park in 1866. This circuit walk goes from the township to the top of the mountain (approx 250m climb) and back via the von Mueller designed botanical gardens. On the mountain look for eucalypts, a 10,000 year old crater, koalas and 360 degree views over farmland.

Within the Great Otway National Park, this walk follows the St. George River upstream then returns along the Sheoak River. Features include tree fern gullies, several waterfalls and the canyon. Opportunity to have a meal at Lorne or Anglesea on the way home.

Meet on the foreshore at the end of North Road Brighton (Melways 67C7) in time for a 6am start. Free parking on the street at the end of North Rd or in Brandon Cl. We follow the path around the bay to Picnic Point Sandringham, pausing to admire the signboards showing paintings of famous artists, in the locations that inspired them. Return via the same route, stopping for a light breakfast on the way.

Possible location north end of Kosciuszko NP eg Round Mountain (Access to Mt Jagungal an icon of Australian Wilderness) or south end say Sawpit Creek (on way into Perisher) or more remote, say on Barry Way near Vic/NSW border. Could accommodate a further assault on Alpine Walking Track towards Canberra.

PORT CAMPBELL & GREAT OCEAN WALK EM & M

This is to complete the last 4 days of the Great Ocean Walk – from either Lake Aire or Castle Cove to Glenample. We will stay in cabins in the Port Campbell Caravan park for 4 nights. We will use our own cars for part shuttle, however will also use a professional shuttle service to minimise driving – there will be some small cost for this. All of this needs to be booked well in advance so I need an indication of interest by October please. Either phone or email me. It is possible to only come for 3 nights and still do most of the walk so also let me know if this is your preferred option.
